Flying over the beach in fog.

While i was up on the Northern Beaches in NSW recently i went to Avalon Beach early one morning to fly the DJI Phantom 2 and get some GoPro footage. It was completely foggy but it made for some different video. A bit scared of flying it over the ocean, but it worked out ok.

Adelaide City Dirt Almost-Octoberfest Jam 2014.

For the second year in a row i went over to Adelaide for the Halloween weekend of BMX festivities. There was the Chief Street Halloween party jam on the Friday night, City Dirt’s ‘Almost-Octoberfest’ Jam on the Saturday and Nathan Parker’s Jam at his ‘Herm Trails’ spot north of the city. It was all time, action packed and fun as anything.

Here are a selection of my favorite photos from Saturday at City Dirt.

A big thanks to all the riders who killed it and showed us what it’s like to fly all weekend.

Antarctica with a Leica M6

I have a few black and white photos taken at Casey Station, Antarctica last summer. All taken down near the wharf. All with my Leica M6, Voigtlander 35mm lens and Kodak Tri-X film. Straight off the scanner.

rgatfield_antarctica_leicaM6_summer1314_webres3 When you’re near the water taking photos or doing anything really, the penguins come from all over to visit you, see what your up too, hang for a while, then leave. This one came from the ocean and left, seen here on his way back for a swim.rgatfield_antarctica_leicaM6_summer1314_webres4  Some sea ice accumulated near the rocks. rgatfield_antarctica_leicaM6_summer1314_webres2 The ice/snow on the foreshore is undercut by the water movement. rgatfield_antarctica_leicaM6_summer1314_webresA small iceburg floating around the bay.

Antarctica on the Flickr Blog.

Flickr have chosen another of my images from my time in Antarctica for their blog. This time it’s of the ‘Wilkes Hilton’ near Casey Station. A field hut used as a weekend getaway from station.

Larundel Psychiatric Hospital

I found another abandoned mental hospital to photograph. Australia sure does have a few still around. I’m not sure how much longer this one will be here, as it looks like the developers are coming in to demolish soon. I heard it has been here for 15+ years in the abandoned state it is in today. It is huge. Many buildings. Lots of rooms. A massive area all up. I was in a rush with the fading sunlight, so i’ll have to get back there soon.

St Kilda Session with Brad Mas.

Brad Mas had his bike, i had my camera. This is the result of a little photo session down at St Kilda Skatepark on a sunny afternoon. Wilkes Station, Antarctica.

I am Currently doing a season down at Casey Station in Antarctica. Working with the Australian Antarctic Division for the summer. Over the bay, 1.5 miles North of here, is Wilkes. We use it as a field hut for trips away for the night, or weekend.

Wilkes station was established as a research base on the 29th of January 1957 by the USA. On the 7th of February 1959 it was transferred over to Australian control and used as their station until they occupied the new Casey station in 1969.

Here are some pics i have from one of these trips.antarctica_rorygatfied_wilkes_hagg_transport_dec13_webres  The Hagglund, our transport over to Wilkes.antarctica_rorygatfied_wilkes_hilton_hut_inside_dec13_webres  Inside the Wilkes Hilton, the accommodation. antarctica_rorygatfied_wilkes_hilton_hut_dec13_webres  Outside view of the Wilkes Hilton.  antarctica_rorygatfied_wilkes_crates_snow_dec13_webres  Some of the many things left behind as the were.antarctica_rorygatfied_wilkes_landscape_dome_ocean_dec13_webres  A weather dome, like most other buildings, left to be.antarctica_rorygatfied_wilkes_landscape_abandoned_station_dec13_webres  Most of the buildings are covered and filled with snow and ice.antarctica_rorygatfied_wilkes_landscape_3xpenguins_dec13_webres  Some Penguins, following us as we explore.antarctica_rorygatfied_wilkes_landscape_dome_dec13_webres A view of the abandoned buildings and towers.
